CBS sportscaster Tim Brando doesn’t understand why people called Jason Collins a “hero” today:

        

Ah, no. This really isn’t complicated. It really isn’t hard to understand why people have called Collins a “hero” after he became the first active player in one of the “big four” North American team sports to come out as gay during his career. As John Aravosis explained today: “When you grow up convinced suicide is your only option, as many of us did, it's a huge deal to finally have role models.” If Tim Brando made a sex tape, he still wouldn’t be much of a role model.

But Brando insisted on not understanding this, repeatedly taking issue with the description of Collins as a “hero”:

        

Brando’s rant seems driven by some rather antiquated views of gay people -- here he is referring to “lifestyle choices”:

        

But at the end of his tantrum, Brando tried to claim his comments weren’t anti-gay; he just doesn’t think the word “hero” can be “used loosely.”

        

Nice try. But here’s the same Tim Brando back in December calling Curt Gowdy “my Hero” for being “the consummate broadcaster.”

        

And here’s Brando calling a birdie -- that’s when a golfer finishes a hole one under par -- “heroic”

        

And finally, here’s Brando calling Darius Rucker -- you know, the guy from Hootie & the Blowfish -- his “HERO for the day.”

        

I guess Tim Brando’s bar for heroism is just a little higher for gays.
